The Glengarry Fencibles Trust’s gala fundraising dinner last Saturday was a success, in spite of Mother Nature’s lack of cooperation.

“Incredibly, only two people who purchased tickets were dissuaded from coming because of the weather,” said Fencibles Trust president Brenda Baxter, “but we know others decided last week not to purchase (tickets) because of the looming forecast” that had initially predicted accumulations of between 10 to 20 cm of snow, along with strong winds.

“We are deeply touched that many have sent and are still sending dinner-related donations instead.” Mrs. Baxter told The News that 90 people attended the event, which also included a talk from Brock University associate professor of history Renée Lafferty-Salhany.

“We thoroughly enjoyed her talk which was based on research she is doing for her next book,” about the War of 1812, said Mrs. Baxter.

“She also elaborated on General (Isaac) Brock’s esteem for (then) Father Alexander Macdonell, and his (Macdonell’s) role as chaplain of the Glengarry Fencibles.”

As of press time, Saturday’s gala had raised more than $9,000 which will be used towards the ongoing renovation of the two-centuries-old Bishop’s House in St. Raphael’s.
