Two hundred years ago, Alexander Macdonell opened Ontario’s first college to safeguard a Canada-centred education for the province’s future teachers, priests, and leaders. On September 19, 2026, join us at the Bishop’s House to view archival letters and mementos, learn the stories of Iona’s first students, and see the House’s own restoration come to life.
Summer Sundays Return to the Bishop’s House of Glengarry
Join us this July and August for afternoons filled with local history, live music, and community spirit. Explore the historic Bishop’s House, located across from the St. Raphael’s Ruins, and enjoy performances by talented local musicians throughout the summer.

Upper Canada’s first college officially opened at St Raphael’s, Glengarry County, in 1826. Known as the College of Iona, classes began on a part-time basis in 1817.
