The mission of Glengarry Fencibles Trust is to honour the history of Canada for all Canadians and to advance education through the careful rehabilitation of the Bishop’s House of Glengarry. The House, in St. Raphael’s, South Glengarry, Ontario, was built in 1808 and is among Canada’s most historic buildings.
We envision the Bishop’s House once again playing a vital role in the Glengarry community as a centre of cultural, educational and heritage activities. We invite you to join us in this quest. We have engaged project partners and developed an appropriate business plan. There is still much to do before it can be fully operational.
A Legacy in Progress
Every gift and every hour of volunteer effort leaves its mark on this House. The following accounts within our annual newsletters offer a glimpse of what that generosity has already made possible, and a sense of the community still gathering to carry this work forward.
2022 Newsletter
Re-enactors on the parade ground, Drystone Canada masons completed the 1826 curved wall’s final course, and a $73,000 Trillium grant brought accessible ramp construction within reach. Meanwhile, Macdonell’s own first-floor rooms emerged restored, fireplaces, flooring, and all. A year of quiet transformation at Bishop’s House.
2021 Newsletter
Windows unboarded and re-glazed at no charge, a first summer student settling into the veranda, and a $240,000 masonry project restoring the north walls and west corner. 2021 brought the House back into the light, one careful repair at a time.
